Aluminum wiring occupies a specific, well-documented slice of electrical history: roughly 1965 to the mid-1970s, when copper prices spiked and aluminum became a cheaper substitute for the 15- and 20-amp branch circuits that feed ordinary outlets and lights in a house. It was a legitimate, code-approved material at the time. It's also the subject of a well-known Consumer Product Safety Commission study, which found that homes wired with this era of aluminum branch wiring were statistically far more likely to develop a fire hazard at their connections than comparable copper-wired homes.
Why the risk is specifically at the connections
The core problem with 1960s–70s aluminum branch wiring isn't the wire itself carrying current down its length. It's what happens at every point the aluminum conductor connects to something else: an outlet, a switch, a wire nut, a breaker terminal. Aluminum has different physical properties than copper. It expands and contracts more with heating and cooling cycles, and it's more prone to a corrosion process called oxidation at the connection point. Recommend evaluation by a licensed electrician experienced with aluminum wiring remediation; connections should be addressed to reduce fire risk." The "CO/ALR" detail matters. Devices specifically rated for direct aluminum connection exist and are a legitimate, code-recognized option, but a huge share of aluminum-wired homes still have their original 1970s-era devices that were never rated for it, which is exactly the mismatch driving the CPSC's findings.
The fix that isn't a full rewire
Unlike knob-and-tube, where the wiring method itself is often the reason for full replacement, aluminum branch wiring has a narrower, well-established, code-recognized remediation that doesn't require tearing out the wire: pigtailing. An electrician splices a short length of copper wire onto the end of each aluminum conductor at every connection point, using a connector specifically listed for aluminum-to-copper transitions — commonly a COPALUM crimp or AlumiConn connector, the two industry-accepted methods. An ordinary twist-on wire nut is not rated for this transition and shouldn't be used for it. The copper pigtail then connects to the outlet, switch, or fixture as normal. This addresses the actual failure point, the connection, without touching the wire running through the walls at all.
This is a meaningfully cheaper, less invasive fix than a full rewire, and it's the standard professional recommendation for most aluminum branch wiring situations. Full replacement is really only necessary when the wiring itself shows physical damage, not just because the material is aluminum.
How to tell if a home actually has it
You don't need to take the finding on faith. Aluminum branch wiring is usually identifiable by a few visual cues an inspector (or an attentive buyer at a walkthrough) can check at an accessible outlet, switch, or in the panel. The wire jacket is often stamped with "AL" or "ALUMINUM" along its length, while copper cable typically has no such marking or says "CU." The conductor itself has a distinctive dull silver-gray color rather than copper's reddish-orange, and it's noticeably softer and more prone to nicking than copper of the same gauge. Homes built or wired in the relevant window (roughly 1965–1975) are the population where this matters most; aluminum wiring found outside that window is less common but not unheard of, especially in additions built with materials on hand at the time. If your report doesn't specify how the finding was confirmed, it's reasonable to ask the inspector whether they visually confirmed the marking or inferred it from the home's age and era alone.

As with knob-and-tube, some homeowners insurance carriers treat aluminum branch wiring as a red flag on new policies. Some decline coverage, some charge more, and some require proof of remediation (often documentation that pigtailing or a full rewire has been completed) within a window after the policy starts. This varies more by carrier for aluminum than it does for knob-and-tube or known-hazard panels, so the answer isn't as predictable. Call your insurance agent directly with the specific address rather than assuming either outcome.
What it means for you as a buyer
- Confirm it's actually 1960s–70s branch wiring, not aluminum service entrance cable. Larger-gauge aluminum feeding the main panel from the meter is common, standard, and a different finding entirely. Don't let the word "aluminum" alone blur the two.
- Call your insurance agent to find out whether this specific carrier requires remediation and on what timeline.
- Get a pigtailing quote, not a rewire quote, unless your electrician specifically finds physical wire damage that changes the scope.
